We actually ate very healthy in Greece. Part of the reason was it’s hard not to. When I saw all the good-looking girls and guys around us, I looked down at the ice-cream cone in my hand and felt guilty. The locals have the sun-kissed skin, fit shape, and the upbeat spirit. I wanted to be one of them!
The first meal we had on this trip was at Moscow for our layover. There was not many choices and the price was ridiculous. We shared a sandwich and a plate of chicken wings. The cashier said the meal came with a drink, but after paying 20 euros(27USD) for the food, we did not think the drink made us feel any better.
Since this post is all about the food we had in Greece, I will just concentrate on all the food we had in Athens and Santorini.
One signature food that you cannot miss in Greece is the grape-leave wrap. It’s simple, but surprisingly yummy. As the name says, it is flavored rice wrapped in grape leaves. The rice tasted like sushi rice you have at a a sushi bar.
Olive oil is a big thing in Greece, nothing you order is not finished with a touch of olive oil. Take salads for instance, the one we had the most in Greece was Greek Salad, it’s basically cucumber, tomato, onion, green pepper, olive, dill and feta cheese, finished with salt, pepper and a touch of olive oil. Yum yum!!!
Gyro is the national dish in Greece. To me it is a big pita bread wrap. You have your choice of meat, normally beef, pork or chicken; some places offer more options like fish and shrimps, wrapped in a pita bread with some veggies and french fries! It is filling and tasty. It can be a quick bite or a meal.
It was on the island Santorini, we celebrated our first anniversary. FYI, last year after we came back from Europe for our honeymoon, I had a really bad allergy. My feet and hands were swollen for literally three months. I took tons of medicines and was really cautious about what I ate. So this time I tried to avoid all the seafood that might trigger my allergy.
So we had some turf. We had this big plate of grilled meats. I would not say it’s surprisingly delicious, but was satisfactory for a carnivore like me. The dessert was actually very chocolatey.
Oh by the way, speaking of dessert, I highly recommend hot freshly baked apply pie with vanilla ice cream. Sooooooo good! My mouth is watering while I am typing the words here.
Greek Moussaka is one of the most popular dishes in Greece, it looks like a lasagna. I did not get to try all different types of Moussaka but the one I did have was an eggplant one and it was really good! Creamy, cheesy with layers of flavors.
We also had local beef stews and spinach wraps.
The ingredients here are fresh and very healthy, lots of vegetables and less artificial additives. Even if the scenery in this country wasn’t as amazing as it is, the food would make any trip here well worth it!
